On the Record: Das Wortspiel

For those who have never heard of Das Wortspiel who are they and what is their music about?

We are a Ukrainian duo – by Maryana Golovko & Maxim Smogol – who’s tears of the last year turned into music and poetry. As we found ourselves in Berlin because of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine – we decided to name our newly created duet in German (which means “play on words”).

What has been the most rewarding / most enjoyable highlight of your career so far?

Lot’s of. For instance opera-requiem “IYOV” by NovaOperaMusicGroup – Maryana took part in – became one of TOP-10 contemporary operas in 2018, According to Music Theatre NOW competition.

What have been some major challenges in your music career so far?

To find ourselves far from our Motherland and to keep creating music.

What are you grateful for right now in this moment?

For Life and its opportunities to love & to create – whatever happens. And of course we are grateful to all wonderful people who defend our country and to all who helps us to get victory in this war.

Physical copies or streaming sites?

Sites streaming digital copies of physical records 🙂

What is your most played song of 2023 so far?

Maryno.

A playlist you can’t get enough of?

Maryana loves music from the 60s, so she is now focused on finding unknown Ukrainian tracks of that time. As for Max, lately he’s been enjoying making music more than listening. That’s why for the last six months he mostly listens to our album:)

A dream collaboration?

Well, if we allow ourselves to dream, it would probably be Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke. Actually the list could be very long, we’re open to collaborations. Also with a lot of Ukrainian artists.

Lastly, what can fans expect from Das Wortspiel this year?

Fans can expect live concerts and new songs for future ‘Chapter II’ album, hopefully.
