For those who have never heard of Dorine Levy, who are you and what is your music about?
Hello to everyone, I’m Dorine, I live in Tel Aviv and I grew up in Montreal. I composed my first song at the age of 14 and, since then, this is my thing. I am a mother of 2 beautiful girls. My music is about my life, my inner and outer world, hopefully for others to relate.
Let’s talk about the new single ‘Tough Love’, what does this song mean to you?
‘Tough Love’ is a song I wrote from a moment of a reflection of my relationship at that time. I saw the truth in front of my eyes and was able to admit it to myself.
And what do you hope that listeners will take away from this track?
Like to normalize a situation where a relationship can be tough, but to remind that it doesn’t mean it’s not a good and blessed one. Hopefully, strength and faith when it gets rocky.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
I’ve been learning ‘Torat Yemima’ for the last 13 years. It is a spiritual study that is very much connected to our day by day life. The main goal is “to love others like you love yourself” and it’s a life journey to really be able to, because you and others are connected and learning how to connect and be in that state takes a lot of understanding and openness. So we start with ourselves with endless self-acceptance till we can give that to anyone on our path.
How did the years during the covid-19 pandemic affect your creativity?
I think it made me turn to a more authentic and simple way of creation. Just go with my flow.
Do you have any advice for fellow or future songwriters who want to branch out of their comfort zone?
I would say listen and learn music that is not your niche. Try to be open and not selective about music. You never know how it will affect the outcome of your own creation.
What are you grateful for right now at this moment?
I’m grateful that I can be grateful. I mean not in an intellectual way that you can say thank you but a deep feeling of gratitude and guidance.
Physical copies or streaming sites, which do you prefer?
One of my biggest hobbies as a child was buying a new CD and listening to it so much I knew it by heart. But today, I prefer streaming. It’s more environmentally friendly and very accessible and that’s our world today.
What is your most played song of 2023 so far?
I listen mostly to the music my girls like to listen to, but Candy of Rosalia was on repeat for a while, the melody got me.
Do you have an album that you can’t get enough of?
I get enough of most albums I listen to because it usually links with phases I go through. But with time, I moved on to new music. I can say that I have been really intrigued by Prince’s music lately and want to listen to everything he has recorded.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
Rick Rubin
And lastly, what can fans expect from Dorine Levy this year?
Hopefully for a new album release. And good blessings to us all.
