For those who have never heard of WALWIN, who are you and what is your music about?
I write songs for the days when adulting feels like a cruel plot twist. If you identify as an elder emo, or a gen zemo – I’ve got nostalgic bangers for you.
Let’s talk about the new single ‘Halo’, what does this song mean to you?
I’ve been working towards this album for the past few years and Halo is the final piece to the puzzle. I released a song called ‘Thorns’ last September and ‘Halo’ feels like the younger brother of that song. I love a big scream-along chorus in 3/4 timing.
And what do you hope that listeners will take away from this track?
It’s a song about the people in our lives that wear a mask; with the intention of deceiving and hurting others. They show the world this angelic persona, but you’ve been unfortunate enough to experience the true person underneath. I feel like we’ve all met someone like that.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
If we’re talking musically, then Mayday Parade’s whole essence is weaved throughout pretty much every one of my songs. They had such a big impact on me as a teenager and it’s just stuck with me this whole time. When it comes to my lyrics and what I write about – 90% of it is relationship based. I feel like most people have either been in or want to be in love – and the journey to get there can be absolutely excruciating; so I never run out of things to talk about when it comes to love, relationships, sex and the feeling of being rejected.
Do you have any advice for fellow or future songwriters who want to branch out of their comfort zone?
Just think about how much fun you’re going to have. Watch any of your favourite bands on stage. Watch any of your favourite artists’ studio diaries. They’ve all got huge smiles on their faces (apart from maybe Sleep Token, but I’m sure they’re having a good time).
Taking something you’ve created into the studio and then onto the stage is a fabulous feeling and don’t let a silly thing like your comfort zone get in the way.
What are you grateful for right now at this moment?
I have to be grateful for the fact that my passion for creating great music hasn’t wavered one bit. I’m still as obsessed with this as I was when I was 14. Maybe even more so, because there wasn’t Spotify back then and I couldn’t see every single person that’s listening to my music at any given time. The fact that I still have heaps of fun every time there’s a guitar in my hands is something I won’t take for granted. I’ve had spells where I’ve fallen out of love with it slightly, so to have that back is something I’m going to work very hard to keep.
What is your most played song of 2023 so far?
We’re a few weeks off from Spotify Wrapped coming out, but if I had to guess – it’s probably going to be Just Pretend by Bad Omens. It’s just an undisputed banger.
Do you have an album that you can’t get enough of?
It’s a throwback, but The Poison by Bullet For My Valentine was one of my first ever no-skips. So many riffs, so much heartbreak – I’ll never get bored of it.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
I literally have no idea how this is going to happen, but I feel like reggaeton and alt music need to combine forces. The parties would be insane! My two favourite types of nights out are emo nites and reggaeton clubs. So with that said, Bad Bunny needs to give me a shout and we can cook up a wrestling themed emo x reggaeton bop.
And lastly, what can fans expect from WALWIN this year?
My album just dropped! It’s called ‘The Prius Diaries: A Hybrid Story’ and it’s available on all platforms. Every single song means so much to me and I’m super excited for it to be out into the world. So if you’re looking for a soundtrack for those times when your life feels like an awkward coming-of-age 00’s rom com – this is for you.
You can also listen to ‘Halo’ in our Indie Rockers playlist.
