Fresh indie rockers Midnight Snowball Fight capture emotional whiplash with ‘Dot Dot Dot’

It’s no mystery that the music industry is completely different since the creation of the internet and it’s constantly changing. We’ve heard stories of songs made online across continents and co-songwriters matching on a dating site. However, the particular case of Washington D.C.’s Midnight Snowball Fight is a first even for us.

This four-piece group was formed entirely through an app called Vampr, which is a place where musicians can advertise their skills in the hopes of meeting like-minded and complimentary artists to work with. Luck was clearly on the side of Midnight Snowball Fight as they were able to connect over a love of bands like The Strokes, Coldplay, Two Door Cinema Club, and HARBOUR, as well as residing in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area. Since coming together, they’ve been busy cutting their teeth on the local live scene and building up a fanbase, but now these emerging indie-rockers are set to expand their horizons with new single ‘Dot Dot Dot’.

The song’s title alludes to the ellipsis punctuation, which can be interpreted is so many ways. It could be a drifting thought, a meaningful pause, an unfinished sentence, hushed hesitation, an awkward loss of words. For this track, the ellipsis signifies hope for the future, one that you can’t exactly describe, but is open to you, full of possibilities. The upbeat rhythms and optimistic melodies conveys this sense of newfound joy. It also translates into the lyrics, “the smile I has on the way back home,” which is such an innocent and relatable image of someone returning home after a really good date.

However, not all is as it seems. The spiky guitars, crashing drums, and sensitive vocals capture the essence of the emotional whiplash of unreciprocated love. That hopeful future-facing smile comes crashing down with a simple text. It’s that gut-wrenching moment when you discover that your date doesn’t feel the same. With this revelation, it becomes clear why the words escape the talented singer and instead the instruments replicate the “dot dot dot.” It’s truly an original way of conveying this all-too-familiar life experience and we already can’t wait to hear what else Midnight Snowball Fight has in store for us this year.
