Scandi-soul band Sūn Byrd evoke subtle romanticism through ‘Hey Love’

Today, we’re pleased to introduce Oslo six-piece band Sūn Byrd (Lyder, Johan, Audun, Bård, Markus & Kristoffer) a unique indie-soul outfit inspired by artful combinations of classic and modern takes on the genre. They’ve just released their debut EP, Hey Love, and it’s the magical title-track that ‘s the focus of today’s feature. Written last Spring, by two of the band members Johan Helland and Audun Haave Reknes, ‘Hey Love’ is the perfect seasonal treat to play as the blossoms fall, the days grow longer, and life pours back into the streets of towns and cities.

Launching into the track with a searing trumpet solo courtesy of Lyder Røed, the band almost immediately dive into upbeat action. Wrapped in a warm production, the elasticated bass bounces out amongst a mesh of shuffling percussion, dreamy guitar melodies (thanks to Jørgen Kasbo), and tinkling keys. A major part of Sūn Byrd‘s sound is the horn section, namely saxophone and trumpet, which add that nostalgic sheen of old-school soul. Listeners also can’t miss those expressive lead vocals which repeatedly call out “hey love,” with rich backing vocals accentuating the subtle romantic aura of this funky anthem. Nothing here is overdone or clichéd, instead the band produces a smooth, timeless, and effervescent Scandi-soul number that we seriously can’t get enough of.

As the band themselves state, this track is all about “energy and character” and those crescendo moments where all the instruments happen together is where Sūn Byrd truly shines.

You can also listen to ‘Hey Love’ in our Soul & Grooves playlist.
