Welsh singer-songwriter Owen Weston releases hazy reverie ‘Little Death Cassette’

Add the name Owen Weston to your new music radar. Having only begun releasing songs last year, this Welsh newcomer hasn’t missed a beat with his effecting songwriting that taps into the fragility of human nature. Recently, Weston release his sophomore EP, Little Death Cassette, although the title-track’s journey goes all the way back to 2019. Resurrected from a different era, he transformed an instrumental demo into a full single by incorporating a heartfelt melody that you can hear today.

From the very first moment, ‘Little Death Cassette’ is a hazy reverie of floating vocals, grounding piano chords, an otherworldly synth note, and organic guitar strums. It’s an intoxicating mix reminiscent of Bon Iver’s 2016 album 22, A Million. Throughout the track, Weston‘s falsetto melodies drift like sunlight through rippling water; effortlessly marrying wistful introspection with an undercurrent of quiet euphoria. Gentle, yet unwavering, this song embraces the listener in a delicate embrace, like the warmth of a treasured yet threadbare memory. Alef Matthews‘ meticulous production further emphasises the luminous depth of Weston’s songwriting, ensuring every note carries the emotional weight and the promise of something just beyond reach.

The result is a reminder to any songwriters to keep ahold of those ideas, whether it’s a demo, an instrumental, a voice memo – who knows when will be the perfect time for it to come to fruition. In this way, ‘Little Death Cassette’ represents patience through the creative process. We’ll definitely have to dive deep for some patience of our own as we wait for more new music from Owen Weston.
