Texas trio The Shrubs return with charming analog single ‘Fall Behind’

Flash your mind all the way back to 2022, with the covid-19 pandemic only just in the rearview mirror and our first tentative steps back to whatever “normality” is supposed to be. It was also early that year that we first came across The Shrubs‘ magnetic sound through their psych-rock single ‘Brilliance’. Years later and we’ve all gone through changes; from moving homes to new jobs to ending and starting relationships to goodbyes and meet-cutes. Of course, the same goes for this Houston trio who have developed and, in some ways, refined their sound.

The brothers Josh and Miguel alongside fellow band-member Sophie have built up their reputation on steadily paced tempos and introspective narratives, yet their latest single ‘Fall Behind’ shakes off the past for a leap into brighter, surf-rock territory. This reverb-drenched anthem is the perfect representation of The Shrubs‘ journey over the years as it was originally penned by Miguel in 2019, so it’s gone through a series of rewrites before reaching this final form.

Entirely recorded and produced at their home studio using vintage analog gear, the track hums with a sentimental charm. Through the process of bouncing recordings across reel-to-reel and cassette tape, the band was able to capture a warm, slightly frayed tone that embraces the beauty of imperfection.

The end result is rich in a vibrant nostalgia where memories seem more alive than the present-day. ‘Fall Behind’ channels that instantly recognisable ocean-side rhythms, sparkling riffs and upbeat melodies to give off a late summer optimism. However, beneath those sun-soaked vibes belies an emotional undercurrent of lingering heartbreak. Through those reflective lyrics, the band unravels a bittersweet reverie of love lost.
