Irish psych-rockers The Savage Hearts make their mark with ‘Radio Silence’

Hailing from the Irish town of Cavan, surrounded by rolling green fields and natural beauty, is the unexpected tour-de-force The Savage Hearts. This four-piece band funnels a rebellious spirit and playful air into their alternative psych-rock sound, which subverts any expectations you might have of a project that comes from this relatively rural setting. On their latest EP, Radio Silence, the quartet give it as good as any metropolitan musicians. Across the four tracks you’ll hear an unrelenting sense of urgency, grit and enthusiasm for forging unpolished rock.

One song that exemplifies The Savage Hearts‘ ethos is the title-track ‘Radio Silence’, which bursts the EP open with a chaotic rock’n’roll swagger. Propelled forward by pounding drums and an invigorating guitar melody, this track immediately signals that this band is ready to make a lasting impression with their carpe diem approach to songwriting. Matching the instrumental’s frenetic precision, the vocal performance is pressing, loose and slightly frayed at the edges. Shouted backing vocals further amplify the lively energy, reminding us of an especially raucous late-night gig.

Helmed by Evan Walsh, who was formerly the drummer with The Strypes, these musicians combine years of experience with a renewed passion for their garage-rock, psychedelic and alternative crossover style. ‘Radio Silence’ is a confident and enlivening gateway into the rest of The Savage Hearts‘ EP, as well as whatever else lies ahead for Ireland’s one-to-watch band.
