MAMI UMAMI channel seductive disorder on ‘belly dancer’

Introducing Swedish outfit MAMI UMAMI (Jaquelin El Amiri and Leonard Furby) who are currently gearing up for the release of their next EP, AFTERWORK, by drip-feeding us hallucinogenic droplets of genre-blurring sound. Their latest dose is ‘belly dancer’, a restless, thrilling and impossible-to-ignore track. Jazzy, almost conversational vocal phrasing drifts across distorted hip-hop percussion, heavy 808 basslines and fractured electronic textures. It is club music with an art-school brain and a punk heartbeat.

With ‘belly dancer’, MAMI UMAMI prioritise a core ethos of unease, instinct and momentum. Yet, for all its experimentation, this is still a wholly accessible dance track. Beneath the strange edges and unpredictable turns lies an undeniable hookiness. It feels intense and urgent, yet strangely playful, and its seductive chaos becomes more addictive with each listen.

There is also a wider statement embedded in the music. As part of AFTERWORK, the song hints at themes of routine, escape and rebellion, exposing the cracks in modern life while offering a euphoric way to move through them. MAMI UMAMI sound fearless, fresh and entirely unconcerned with convention. Look out for the EP coming soon via Bad Wednesday.
