The Los Angeles-based, Baltimore-born artist Carter Vogel has steadily been building a catalogue of emotion driven songs that explore love, heartbreak, longing and missed connections. Continuing this expedition into matters of the heart, Vogel has shared his latest single ‘Close Call’, which might share similar themes, but it’s a noticeably shift in his style.
As the songwriter himself states, “‘Close Call’ touches on my indie side. It’s the first of its kind, and it’s a direction I’ve been seeking out for a while.”
What started out as a rough sketch in the studio on his bass guitar, ‘Close Call‘ soon blossomed into a full-fledged single that seemed destined to have been written. From the very beginning, Vogel imparts an authentic sense of intimacy through simple guitar strumming and sure-footed percussion. Over the smooth introduction we encounter the artist’s charming vocal, which here is lightly draped in a subtle vocal effect, which adds to that bedroom-pop atmosphere.
The track glides forward wrapped in this warm and nourishing production. Vogel doesn’t need to push into passionate crescendos and mysterious pauses, instead he allows the straight-forward vulnerability of his songwriting to speak for itself. Through his delicate melodies, you’ll discover a narrative so familiar to many of us; that of a meaningful connection, but one that ultimately burns itself out. Questioning lines like, “did you think you could forget me?,” reveal the bittersweet pain underneath Vogel‘s relatively placid performance.
Standing somewhere between acceptance and regret, ‘Close Call’ is a shimmering display of Carter Vogel‘s emotionally intelligent songwriting within his new indie sound. We can’t wait to hear more!
