One might assume that after a decade of writing about songs, it would be easy to put your thoughts together with each and every new release. However, in this case, we were initially lost for words. ‘Something New’, from London-based outfit Monday’s Monsoon, is just an exquisitely self-contained piece of music that we genuinely didn’t know how we could add to this perfect listening experience. However, we’ll give it a go.
This band has steadily been releasing tracks for around two years now with a clear vision of authenticity and emotional tension. What makes ‘Something New’ different is the unmatched attention to detail. While it was recorded in their familiar studio space, the track was then sent off to RCA Studio B in Nashville to be mixed before being pinged back over the pond for final production at Metropolis Studios in London.
Of course, good quality recording and production is just one part of the story. Good songwriting is the real make-or-break element. Here, the band hone in on the fragile process of learning to trust again after the end of a toxic relationship. You can hear that tenuous energy of a broken heart in the minimalist string-led introduction. After a few seconds, it swiftly blossoms into the highly atmospheric soundscape where intricate drum work, resonating piano keys and yearning violin notes are carefully arranged.
Over the cinematic instrumentation, the lead singer delivers his clean, melodic vocals with such ease and control; this really allows the song’s message to float over to the listener. The chorus is also a massive highlight here, with sincere lyrics like, “and we’ll take our time, just let the night unwind, ’cause we don’t have to find the answers, I am just as lost as you.” It’s a sense of collective understanding that’s so touching.
Stretching over four minutes and forty seconds, there’s no denying that ‘Something New’ is a true anthem that has the potential to be Monday’s Monsoon‘s break-through hit.
