We’re not often lured into the dancier side of music, but we simply couldn’t resist the cool, laidback and nostalgic sounds of Rock Berg’s latest single ‘Let Go!’. Seemingly at odds with its hyperbolic title, this track doesn’t kick off with histrionics to grip your attention, but rather it offers a subtle introduction of slinking bass, 80s-inspired percussion and anticipation-building synths. After around 25 seconds, Rock Berg‘s nonchalant yet breezy vocal enters the fray, further solidifying the understated approach here.
As the track progresses, those punchier sounds that Rock Berg had been teasing throughout come to the fore. Around a minute in, the sleek electronica amps up into patterned rhythms, retro synth textures and an airy production that’s reminiscent of Roosevelt and Eurythmics. Once again, the artist’s voice is a dazzling addition here, as those ethereal melodies are layered up against glitchy vocal clips.
Listening to ‘Let Go!‘, you can’t help but feel Rock Berg‘s genuine sense of joy and freedom. We think that comes from this artist’s desire to make music that feels true to them; it’s clear they’re not chasing current trends or even trying to replicate 80s band note-for-note. Rock Berg sits somewhere in the grey and with that they can more readily embrace self-acceptance and subvert outside expectations.
