Introspection is never easy. It might be essential, unavoidable, inevitable, but that doesn’t mean it’s a comfortable experience. This is the core of ‘Closing In’, the latest single from Phoenix-based composer and songwriter Allan Jamisen, who has worked through a process of self-examination in order to uncover change and the ability to move forward.
What really impressed us about ‘Closing In’ is the uncanny mirroring of that inward-facing journey. The opening eases the listener in with minimalist yet active beats akin to The XX, which nestle up alongside Jamisen‘s hushed vocals. This sense of hesitancy in the song’s introduction reflects that idea of first peeking behind the curtain of one’s own psyche.
Themes of troubled dreams, reclusive thoughts and the unseen swirl around this highly atmospheric production, which becomes more intricate as Jamisen introduces a melodic guitar, dulcet backing vocals and indietronica flourishes. As the track progresses, you can really feel the protagonist’s confidence growing as he leans further into emotional vulnerability.
The arrangement of ‘Closing In’, moving from melancholic uncertainty to near-euphoria, is in itself a representation for the reward that lies at the end of persistence and patience with oneself.
