‘Turn Down My Shine‘ is only the second single from Brighton-based singer-songwriter and session musician Nellie Feldmann, following her quiet debut back in 2024 with ‘Feeding My Faults’. We know as well as anyone that it should never be quantity that’s praised, but quality, and that’s exactly what you get with this rock-tinged bedroom pop track. It’s a measured and thoughtful reflection of a previous entanglement with a narcissistic person.
Opening with a 90s rock guitar melody and steadily paced percussion, the track immediately sets an unhurried atmosphere through which Feldmann‘s soulful voice unravels the past. She unpacks how being misread, diminished and repeatedly labeled as “too quiet” was such a frustrating experience. With lines like, “you wear a mask, but it’s paper thin, it kinda hides the fucking plastic grin”, she turns the mirror back on her abuser to convey how it’s the words you say, not those that you don’t, that show your true character.
As the track progresses and with each revolution of that punchy chorus, Feldmann gains confidence. By 2:28 minute mark, those thumping drums hit harder, the frenzied guitars become more forceful and her voice is even bolder than before. It’s as though through songwriting, she has purged her past pain. ‘Turn Down My Shine‘ is truly a cathartic pop-rock gem for anyone whose self-esteem has been eroded away by another’s ill intentions.
