Julie Paschke swims in her own lane, not just parallel to others, but against the tide of what’s expected or what’s considered conventional. Here’s someone who lives life differently, not necessarily out of choice, but because that’s what comes most naturally to her. This Melbourne-based musician has put her experience into song with ‘Nowhere’, a quietly intense piece of rock-laced indie-folk.
Before we dive into the track, let’s hear from Paschke herself: “Life’s absurd and glorious and it’s rare to find like-minded companions on the road. So in this song I’m just kind of asking someone to come along with me and see stuff similarly because sometimes it’s nice to share experiences. A road where there are little cares and we’re free from the trappings of a human mind or a human life.”
‘Nowhere’ opens with a commanding and solitary beating drum, which reminds us of the saying, “march to the beat of your own drum”, to describe someone who does whatever they want. Immediately, we feel Paschke‘s self-assured presence as she offers a tempting invitation, “hey baby, don’t you wanna come with me?” Later on, a searing guitar solo hints at the carefree wildness one can achieve when they simply let go.
By almost entirely writing, playing and recording the track herself from home, this artist creates an intimate listening experience, yet there’s something outward-looking and wanderlust-y about those hazy, warm textures. This atmosphere is further emphasised through dreamy strings courtesy of guest guitarist Leigh Lambert and subtle finishing touches from Dan Duszynski.
