KATIA POJIDAEVA has released one of the most powerful statements on the all-consuming corporatisation and homogenisation of our current society. With the aptly titled ‘Capitalism’, the Moscow-based artist takes a cynical stab at the crushing pressure to acquire sameness, of boiling everything down into numbers and of the powerful elite who often cast aside their humanity for profit. These issues touch practically every nation and community across the world right now, making this a potentially far-reaching declaration on behalf of the people.
Opening with haunting microtonal strings, ‘Capitalism’ immediately signals the sinister nature of the corporate machine, while POJIDAEVA lists some workers’ names and their qualities. This narrative is compounded by the powerful music video that shows a Black Mirror-esque office which centres on the artist’s engaging and dramatic performance.
Over that first minute, the tension builds and builds until the track takes a complete side-shift into orchestral shadows. Here, POJIDAEVA theatrically sings, “get rich more,” and thus captures the entire sentiment of insatiable greed that’s driving late-stage capitalism right now. This flows into the song’s arguably most powerful moment when a marching rhythm takes over to frame the central image: “we wake up every morning for our march of tiny wheels.”
As a follow-up to the KATIA POJIDAEVA‘s debut release ‘Inherited Scars’, which explores generational trauma, ‘Capitalism’ is another transformative single that fights back against conformity and self-sacrifice, but without condemning the individuals who have no choice but to become a cog in the machine.
