From the underground scene in Phoenix, Arizona, you’ll find a dynamic four-piece band Gunshots or Fireworks who have recently released their sophomore EP, DÉSORDRE. Recorded and released independently, this four-track collection is a pocket rocket of alt-rock energy, reflective songwriting and seamless band chemistry. It’s a great introduction for this indie outfit and where our attention has been pulled to is the EP’s second single ‘Open Mic’.
The title of this track, “open mic”, hints towards the DIY spirit of this band who cut their teeth on the local gig circuit or performance nights. As such, this track buzzes with an easy confidence, built on gritty guitar textures, driving rhythms and upbeat-yet-grungey melodies. The production also adds to that self-made aura through its rough, unpolished atmosphere.
Throughout the track, there’s a sense of optimism conveyed through the rocking tempo and catchy lyrics, yet this isn’t straight-forward joy, but rather it’s a measured contemplation. Gunshots or Fireworks offer up questions about a past that can’t be changed, “do we turn back from the mess? Erase mistakes we never should have had?”, in order to illustrate the futility of dwelling on the past. As a result, ‘Open Mic’ is unexpectedly empowering.
There’s more of this band’s emotionally-charged songwriting to be discovered on the DÉSORDRE EP, so be sure to check out the full record here.
