Maryland duo LunaRover recently popped up on our radar with the single ‘Fountains’ and now they’re back yet again with another cosmic take on their dreamy rock-pop. Their latest song ‘Throw Me A Line’ opens with galactic synths, swaying yacht-rock rhythms and a charming keys melody; this swiftly wraps up the listener up in an easy sonic embrace. That sense of momentum slides seamlessly into airy, emotionally-charged vocals that repeatedly make a desperate plea for rescue.
The central narrative of ‘Throw Me A Line’ is that of a plane crash victim who has miraculously survived, but their safety is still tenuous as they cling to a piece of debris while out in the ocean. Being confronted by one’s own fragile mortality naturally brings up feelings of existential crisis, as reflected in the song’s haunting question, “am I enough?”. As such, this track really isn’t about a plane crash at all, it’s about what happens when your core beliefs about who you are and why you are here stop making sense.
There’s a refined contrast between the dynamic arrangement, all hypnotic grooves and spacey synths, and the protagonist’s psychological spiralling. It’s especially in the track’s final stretch that it all culminates into a psychedelic flight, implying either surrender or another burst of hope. With stylistic hints towards David Bowie, Queen or more recent name Sam Ryder, ‘Throw Me A Line’ proves that self-made, DIY projects can still hold as much potency as big-budget numbers. We can’t wait to hear how LunaRover will expand their creative universe next.
