When we think about heartbreak, it’s seems to be something so definitive, so final, so irreparable, yet that doesn’t always match up with reality. We don’t necessarily get a clean break and it’s with new single ‘honest’ that experimental indie artist Blue Capricorn navigates the lingering emotional spaces that’s often left open. As the third preview from his forthcoming EP, when you come back, transcend me, it shows how matters of the heart are a fragile balance between vulnerability, attachment and acceptance.
Cuban-American producer and songwriter LOREN KOLE adds another layer of intimacy to the track’s reflective atmosphere. Together, Blue Capricorn and LOREN KOLE inhabit the uncertainty that follows when love has ended but its emotional imprint remains. Their chemistry makes the track feel conversational, as though two people are processing the same complicated feeling from slightly different perspectives.
On the production side, lush synths, delicate keys, atmospheric guitars and restrained percussion create a hazy, cinematic backdrop that never overwhelms the song’s emotional core. Instead, Blue Capricorn leaves room for the sense of distance at the heart of the track, giving its silences and softer textures as much weight as its melodic moments.
The greatest strength of ‘honest’ is its refusal to package heartbreak into a neat conclusion.
