On the Record: Sunstinger

on

For those who have never heard of Sunstinger, who are they and what is their music about?

Sunstinger is me – Scott Gourlay (Lead Guitar), Taylor Wright – Vocals/Guitar, Bill Anderson – Bass, Nick Hernandez – Drums. We’re all mates from mining villages scattered around Fife who all know each other through growing up playing in bands around the local scene. Our music isn’t about anything specifically, usually just what’s happening in our personal lives at the time of writing the lyrics.

What have been some major challenges in your music career so far?

I think the biggest challenge has obviously been the whole Covid thing. Just before the pandemic struck we had got a bit of traction, pulling in bigger crowds and it was heading in a good direction, then everything was off the table which was a bit of a blow.

What are you grateful for right now at this moment?

I like this question, I’m currently at work and it gave me a moment to sit and reflect. Right now I’m grateful for a lot of things – My family, my partner, my dogs, chilli heatwave doritos, being worry free. Not in that order.

Physical copies or streaming sites?

For me, streaming sites. As much as it pains me to say it, I don’t have enough time to do physical copies. I’m usually listening to music on the go so it’s streaming sites for the win.

What was your most played song of 2021?

My most played of 2021, according to Spotify is Televised Mind by Fontaines DC.

A playlist you can’t get enough of?

To be honest, just the ones I make up. I’ll have the most random songs on playlists at times that would lose me serious street credit within the band if I revealed what they were.

A dream collaboration?

I’d absolutely love to collaborate with Action Bronson. I’m a big fan of his and he seems like he’d be a riot to hang out with. As a band we love him and his show ‘F*ck, That’s Delicious’. To be fair we’d rather collaborate on the show than musically probably, haha.

& Lastly, what can fans expect from Sunstinger in the coming year?

We’ve booked our first gig since last year, PJ Molloys Dunfermline on 9th October, hoping to get some more shows in the calendar as soon as we can. We’ve been in with Magnus recording another EP, which we need to go in and finish off, then look to release. Fingers crossed we can get some festivals booked once they open back up.
