Blueburst‘s debut single ‘Vanish’ is a refreshing blast from the past. With its lush, guitar-driven sound and foot-stomping pace, the track is a throwback to the alternative and post-punk sounds of the 80s. Yet, it also manages to feel timeless and contemporary, thanks in no small part to the collaboration between guitarist Craig Douglas Miller and legendary guitarist Marty Willson-Piper.
Miller’s vocals are perfectly suited to the music, with a rawness and honesty that harkens back to the great alt-rock vocalists of the past. Meanwhile, Willson-Piper’s guitar work is simply sublime, adding layers of texture and nuance to the track that elevate it to something truly special.
What’s particularly impressive about ‘Vanish’ is how it manages to capture the essence of the 80s alt-rock sound without feeling derivative or overly nostalgic. There’s a freshness and vitality to the track that suggests that Blueburst is not content to simply rehash old sounds, but is instead using those sounds as a jumping-off point for something new and exciting.
This is a fantastic debut for Blueburst, and bodes well for the full LP scheduled to release in the fall of 2023. With the help of Willson-Piper, Miller has managed to resurrect his career in impressive fashion, and has created a sound that feels both classic and contemporary.
