Southend-On-Sea indie rockers The Trusted have been familiar friends here at Unrecorded, with ear-catching tracks like ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Millennium’ being previously featured. In keeping with the band’s extroverted British rock sound, their new single ‘Burning The Night’ is a welcome addition to their ever-growing discography. The passionate energy of the crashing drums and high-octane guitars translate the track’s central theme of insomnia that’s triggered by heartache; it evokes images of nights spent tossing and turning in bed, fixating on where it all went wrong. The lead vocals give a powerhouse performance to match the soaring textures and accentuating the raw emotionality of ‘Burning The Night’.
Here, we’ve asked The Trusted‘s Tom Cunningham a few key questions to get to the heart of their new single and for you to get to know the band a little better.
For those who have never heard of The Trusted, who are you and what is your music about?
We are a four-piece manned band from sunny Southend-On-Sea. We write guitar music for the heart, mind and soul. Basically, we just want our songs to reach people
Let’s talk about the new single ‘Burning The Night’, what does this song mean to you?
It’s a song about insomnia and late-night heartache. You know when you’re lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling? Burning The Night, is that moment.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
Depends on what we are working on. For Burning The Night, I think Radiohead and The National had the biggest influence on the overall sound. I’ve always been inspired by both of these bands’ use of rhythm and texture. These things always play a big role in the song writing process.
Do you have any advice for fellow or future songwriters who want to branch out of their comfort zone?
My biggest piece of advice is to write a song every day. Creativity is a muscle, the more you exercise it, the better you become.
What are you grateful for right now at this moment?
My bandmates. Somehow after seven years, we are still together hahaha.
What is your most played song of 2023 so far?
Probably ‘Get Rhythm,’ by Johnny Cash. I’m going through a real JC phase at the moment.
Do you have an album that you can’t get enough of?
Achtung Baby – U2. Literally my bible
Who would be your dream collaboration?
Give me Bono and I’ll give you anything you want
And lastly, what can fans expect from The Trusted this year?
We’ve got more music to end the year with a bang…
