Welcome to Unrecorded! For those who aren’t familiar with Amy Pinkus, can you introduce yourself?

My name is Amy Pinkus. I am an indie-pop artist based out of Toronto, Ontario.

As a relative newcomer to the industry, how would you describe your musical style?

I would describe my musical style somewhere between indie-pop and indie-folk.

Your new song ‘How’s Your New Wife?’ has such an evocative title, so what inspired you to write this song?

Truthfully – I knew my “first love” was getting married, but it still brought up a lot of unexpected emotions—especially since we hadn’t spoken in so long. It made me wonder, “What would I say if I could talk to you right now?” The song ended up turning into a one-sided conversation to that person.

How did you approach writing the lyrics? Did they come naturally or was it a longer process?

Lyrics have always come naturally to me. Usually, a word or a line pops into my head, and I try to build a good portion of a song from there. I love capturing the raw emotion of the moment.

Your songwriting is very honest and relatable, so how important is authenticity in your music?

Immensely! Lately, I’ve been trying to write songs without any personal meaning behind them, to challenge myself as a writer. But honestly, almost all my songs are

word-for-word, real-life experiences. I feel lucky to process my emotions through music, and it’s cool to share that with others and have them connect with the lyrics.

The song features smooth harmonies and a heartfelt indie-pop sound. What was your vision for its production?

Originally, I envisioned the song as much more mellow, really leaning into the bittersweetness of the lyrics. But early in production, we changed the chorus chords, giving it a “bouncier” feel. I ended up loving that vibe because it’s not necessarily a sad song! I like the contrast between the lyrics and the production.

It touches on the bittersweet experience of watching someone move on. So do you hope that listeners can take something away from this song?

I want people to know that every emotion you feel when someone moves on is completely valid—jealousy, sadness, warmth, peace. These feelings are all part of being human.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences? Did any of them inspire this song?

One of my all-time favorite artists is Amy Winehouse. Obviously this isn’t a jazz song, but I think she’s such an honest songwriter. Her lyrics are often on-the-nose, but that’s what makes her songs so vulnerable. You feel like you learn something about her in every song. I always try to channel that same energy and intention in my own music.

You have nine more songs coming this year, can you give us a sneak peek of what’s next?

My next single will be out March 7th! It’s the first of the ten songs I started recording with my producer – and now fiance. It holds a special place in my heart because it talks about my struggle with anxiety.

Do you have any other plans for 2025?

I’d love to start performing if the opportunity comes up. For now, I’m just grateful for all the support I’ve received and excited to share more music throughout the year!
