Liverpool four-piece Honey Motel are back once again return with a stunningly fluid new single ‘If You Didn’t Exist’, which perfectly showcases their ever-evolving sound. Packed with unexpected twists and turns, this is the band’s most confident track yet, one that takes charge of their indie-pop charm by fusing it with subtle indie grit and winding jazzy overtures.
The introduction is a slow-burning affair which smolders on into a euphoric chorus, one that dives headfirst into some emotional depths. Some highlights have to be Fred Griggs’ husky yet magnetic vocals, which perfectly complement the soulful guitar lines and the driving rhythm section. There’s a real maturity in how the track shifts gears, from playful lyricism to intricate textures to bursts of cathartic energy. It all comes together to build up anticipation for the cathartic release in the chorus. This deft instrumental composition allows to track to expertly explore the fear of losing those unseen anchors that hold life together. Honey Motel tap into something universally human.
As guitarist Sam Meredith shares, the track came alive the moment their new frontman stepped in:
“This is the first track the band and Fred clicked together on. I showed him the track in one of our first rehearsals and Lew and Jack played along. It was like the track went from black and white to technicolour instantly. He just seemed to get it…Fred brought it to life. Thematically, ‘If You Didn’t Exist’ is about the quiet weight certain things carry in our lives. Things that might seem insignificant to others, but for us, hold everything together. A favourite band, a partner, a personal obsession, take them away, and suddenly the whole structure starts to wobble. The song sits with that feeling, the fear of losing what makes life feel like life.“
Backed by recent high-profile live shows and a growing buzz, ‘If You Didn’t Exist’ continues to build excitement as this Scouse quarter heads towards their upcoming EP.
