Is there a more life-defining coming-of-age moment than confessing your love for the first time? We can probably all remember the first ILY sent through text or exchanged verbally, it’s such an emotionally powerful moment. This moment has been perfectly captured by emerging musician LESS in their new single ‘Instead of Making Love (Say Hello)’.
This track has been made to feel purposefully timeless thanks to recording entirely through analogue machines at Kapow Vintage Studio in Florence. These vintage techniques imbue ‘Instead of Making Love’ with a warm, crinkly and textured atmosphere that invites the listeners into LESS‘ intimate inner world. Within this lofi space, the Italian musician explores love, identity and self-evolution in a world that often demands conformity. It sounds candid and quietly empowering, harking back to songwriters of the 90s and 00s who often chose authenticity over today’s masked performativity.
Hidden beneath the themes of self-realisation and growth is a break-up; that inevitable and utterly relatable pain that nearly all of us have experienced in our lives. While it can be a devastating reality in the moment, there’s also something to be said for the catalytic potential of being launched back into singledom. It’s a moment to reconnect with yourself, which LESS relays in the shimmering tension throughout this track.
Built from crackling guitars, urgent percussion and heartfelt vocals, ‘Instead of Making Love (Say Hello)’ is a poignant statement on the need for communication; not only with others, but most importantly with the self. Here’s proof that sometimes LESS really is more.
