Veronica Raine returns with luminescent indie-folk single ‘moonlight’

Veronica Raine swooned onto our radar last year with her stunning debut single ‘August’. Now, the Canadian singer-songwriter is back to remind us exactly why she’s a one-to-watch with her latest heartfelt release. Reminiscent of global artists like Julia Jacklin and Phoebe Bridgers, ‘moonlight’ is a beautifully melancholic indie-folk offering that captures the ache of loving someone you already know you are losing. She uses the striking metaphor of moonlight to explain how the luminescent allure of some relationships actually distorts reality.

From the very start, Raine sets the atmosphere for ‘moonlight’. A delicately plucked acoustic guitar introduces a mesmerising melody over which the artist’s charming, americana-tinged voice begins to tell this tale of love and woe. As the track progresses, the soundscape flourishes with sustained synths and delicate keys to underpin her expressive strings and increasingly impassioned vocal performance.

With the repeated question, “tell me how to fix this?”, delivered in an authentically yearning tone, it seems as though Raine is not only reaching out to that unrequited lover, but also the listener. You can’t help but get personally involved in her songwriting; it just feels so urgent, as though everything is unfolding in front of you in real time. Yet, we know we can’t do anything, but only wish the best for the future of the pained protagonist.

‘moonlight’ isn’t so much a break-up song, but rather it’s about grieving someone who might be physically there, but their heart no longer belongs to you. Quite simply, we are once again awe-inspired by Veronica Raine‘s storytelling prowess and we can’t wait to hear what comes next.
