‘Oh June’ is a radiant folk-pop offering from Sarah Wendlandt & Franzi Berg

We all find an outlet that suits our unique needs, personalities and talents, whether that’s keeping a journal, confiding in friends, expelling our emotions through exercise or creating physical art. For musical duo Sarah Wendlandt and Franzi Berg, they find catharsis and solace in songwriting, using this creative expression like a diary to navigate life’s ups, downs, challenges and successes. Their latest piece of confessional storytelling is ‘Oh June’, which represents the duo’s desire to find deeper meaning and connection through everyday life.

Built on rustic-sounding strings and a foot-tapping tempo, this indie folk-pop track really welcomes listeners in with an endearing sense of warmth that’s grounded and earthy. These acoustic guitar, banjo and piano textures act as the perfect backdrop to Wendlandt and Berg‘s luminescent harmonies. By combining their elfin vocal tones, they really emphasise the magical quality of that summer month, with all its life and activity in full bloom.

At the heart of ‘Oh June’, is a femme fatale who our singers forewarn the arrival of with the statement, “watch out, there she goes, shoes are tied up to walk these roads, silently she knows, trouble after trouble all her instinct grows.” This protagonist is a representation of the divine feminine, who is wild, unyielding, searching and in constant motion. Yet this outwardly tough exterior is a shield and Wendlandt and Berg hint at a transition, “though lately it cracked up, it cracked up your skin, for maybe the light to fall right in.”

As the track progresses, the light and folky arrangement never overreaches and we’re left to come to our own conclusions as to where the central character’s journey will lead. Partly, it’s that mystery that has us intrigued to hear more from Sarah Wendlandt and Franzi Berg‘s project, but even without the narrative, there’s no denying there’s something special about what these two musicians are creating together.
