Last year, Ella Bruccoleri and Yoan Segot made their debut as Marry Me Emelie!, an entirely bedroom-produced project that chronicled the end of the duo’s romantic relationship and their new chapter as creative collaborators. This unique origin has imbued their music with a delicate sensitivity and yet it possesses a greater purpose, that being the pursuit of creative expression beyond the bounds of a break-up. The pinnacle of 2025 was the release of their first EP, When I Come To, which was followed by a sold-out show at London’s Walthamstow Trades Hall.
With a promising start already underway, Marry Me Emelie! have made their return with their first song of the year, ‘Flowers’. In many ways, this track continues a desire for deep, emotional exploration, without fear of uncovering those darker and more melancholic feelings. Notably, this new single takes the shape of a funeral elegy, with its dirge-like tempo, sparse instrumentation and a sense of respectful distance throughout. Leading the way, like a light in the dark, is Bruccoleri‘s commanding voice with its bruised and breathy tones.
There’s an almost skeletal structure to the punctuated lyrics, as though you can see how each word would be placed on a page. Here, such a line is framed by two key symbols: “silence – laid at my feet, and that look again, makes me weak, you were my baby, you were my baby – flowers.” One can’t help but ruminate on the meaning behind “silence” and “flowers”; their presence, their absence, their stillness.
By stripping back their sound to its essential parts, the project becomes even more intentional, reminiscent of the brooding elegance of Mazzy Star and the lilting melodies of Lana Del Rey. For the last minute of ‘Flowers’, it takes an unexpected turn as all that quiet tension bursts into reverb-soaked strings, persistent drums and wailing calls. We’re left with so many questions by the end and we’re intrigued to follow where Marry Me Emelie! will take this project next.
