On The Record: Emilia Tarrant

For those who have never heard of Emilia Tarrant before, who is she and what is her/her music about?
I am a 19-year-old singer songwriter from Winchester, Hampshire who writes (mostly) sad songs from personal experiences; song-writing is like writing a diary for me. I started playing the piano at the age of 12, and from that, writing songs came naturally. I love writing songs that people can relate to, and so they’re usually about relationships and mental health, which are also core parts of my personal life.

What has been the most rewarding/ most enjoyable highlight of your career so far?

The most rewarding highlight of my career so far has to be when my debut single ‘If You Want Love’ was featured on Love Island 2019. It was such a nice surprise and boosted my song and career massively. I watch and love the show anyway, so couldn’t believe it when I heard it being played behind a massive break- up scene!

What have been some major challenges in your music career so far?
Recently one of the most difficult challenges in my career has been pushing through the COVID-19 pandemic. Not being able to perform live, go to the studio as regularly, have face to face songwriting sessions and release new music has been the toughest thing for me. I am so happy to finally release my new single ‘Honeymoon Phase’; it has been a long time coming!

Imagine sending a message to 15-year-old Emilia Tarrant from Emilia Tarrant today, what would you say to her?
If I could send a message to my 15-year-old self, I’d tell her to have faith and not put too much pressure on herself. I’d say big things are coming but building a career takes time and there will be bumps along the way. At the time I was finding my sound, my songwriting style and was ‘manager-less’. I was desperate to release my music into the world, but I was also young and new to the industry. I wouldn’t change anything that has happened in the last few years as every experience I’ve had building my career has made me who I am as an artist today!

What are you grateful for right now in this moment?
I am grateful for good health in myself, my family and my friends, as well as the support I have received from them recently whilst preparing for releasing new music. They mean everything to me!

Physical copies or streaming sites?
Streaming sites have their benefits, but nothing compares to placing an old or new vinyl disc onto my record player! It is a dream to release my own music on vinyl someday.

What was your most played song of 2020?
The song I listened to the most in 2020 was ‘You Broke Me First’ by Tate Mcrae. Such an amazing piece of songwriting!

A playlist you can’t get enough of?
Apple Music’s ‘Today’s Acoustic’! The playlist features so many incredible songs. I was lucky enough to be have my new single ‘Honeymoon Phase’ featured in this playlist alongside Taylor Swift, Passenger, Dermot Kennedy, London Grammar, Holly Humberstone and more. Such a dream for me.

A dream collaboration?
There are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with for different reasons. My top choice would probably have to be Moby; to sit in a studio with him and create music would be a dream! He is such an incredible producer. I’d have to say Coldplay would have to be another of my top choices. They have been my favourite band forever and to collaborate on a song would be out of this world for me.

& Lastly, what can fans expect from Emilia Tarrant in the coming year?
I have so much planned for this year! I will be releasing more music in the coming months, leading up to my debut EP, which will be out later this year. I am dying to play live gigs again too; it’s been too long since I last did that!
