On The Record: The Bobby Tenderloin Universe

Tell us about the meaning behind your latest single release ‘That’s All I’m Sayin’’?

‘That’s All I’m Sayin” is meant to capture the innocence and naivety that most boys have experienced in one way or another. The song specifically is about a boy who falls in love with the picture of a woman on a magazine. He thinks that if he could only meet her and tell her how he feels, then she surly would feel the same way and they could be in love forever.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

My hero and biggest inspiration is my grandmother. She was a touring ragtime pianist in the 30’s and 40’s and taught me everything I know.

What was it like performing at The Great Escape recently? We heard you went down a storm…

The Great Escape was magical. I feel so fortunate and appreciative that so many people showed up to our shows and we made some great friends. I can’t wait to head back to Brighton to play again soon!

What does a typical day in the studio look like for you guys?

Thus far, I’ve been writing, recording and producing all the material myself in my basement studio. Once I have the song mostly done, I bring in my backup vocalists to sing those parts and then I send it over to my pedal steel player so he can add that. We recently also did a “live to vinyl” recoding with my whole band where we recorded a record in one take, straight to vinyl. In the future I’d love to do more live recording with my band in different studios.

How long have you been writing songs for?

I’ve been writing songs in since I was in high school and it’s always felt a defining part of who I am as a person. I’ve also find it therapeutic.

Aside from music, what do you get up to in your spare time?

I like to draw and essentially dig all kinds of creativity. I also love food! At one point I wrote a song about Brad Leone and his fried bologna sandwiches. It was from the perspective of a guy who thought that if he knew how to cook, maybe his partner wouldn’t have left him. I never got the song to a point where it would be ready to send to him but I’m sure he’d get a kick out of it lol.
