For those who have never heard of Alex Frew before, who is he and what is his music about?
Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me! I just released my debut project, the Cobalt EP, along with a bunch of videos I’m super excited about. The sonics of the EP very much fall into the world of pop music, but have an alternative edge to them that’s takes the songs down a more introspective route.
What has been the most rewarding/ most enjoyable highlight of your career so far?
I’ll always remember putting out my first ever song, Get Out Alive. After working for so many years creating music, it was incredibly rewarding to finally put out a single into the world. It was really just a watershed for me, and the feeling was incredible. It was almost like, “Oh, wow, I’m actually doing this!”.
What have been some major challenges in your music career so far?
The process of writing lyrics has been very much a progression for me over the years. There was a long period of time in my youth where the lyrics in the songs I wrote simply didn’t make much sense, so really honing the craft of words has been a huge challenge over the past two years. Personally, I feel I’ve come a very long day in this regard, and I’m excited to see how I progress over the coming years.
Imagine sending a message to 15-year-old Alex Frew from Alex Frew today, what would you say to him?
Just enjoy it! I put a lot of pressure on myself as a younger guy, and it really took away from how present I was in my experiences, so just try to see the forest for the trees…
What are you grateful for right now in this moment?
Right now, I’m incredibly grateful for the friends and family I have around me during this tumultuous time in the world. Times like these really make you take stock of the important things in life, so I’m definitely grateful for the people in my life.
Physical copies or streaming sites?
Personally, I love owning records! It makes me feel much more connected to the artist, and it also helps support people making the music to a higher degree, so physical copies all the way.
What was your most played song of 2020?
My most streamed song according to Spotify was No No No by Beirut!
A playlist you can’t get enough of?
I’m a huge fan of making my own playlists, so I’d have to say my list entitled Spineless has been frequented the most recently.
A dream collaboration?
Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, without a doubt.
& Lastly, what can fans expect from Alex Frew in the coming year?
I just released my debut project Cobalt, so go check that out, but also stay tuned for new music throughout the year!
